Winery notes (2014 Vintage)
"When viticulture and winemaking work in synchronicity, the end result is naturally elegant wine. At Paxton we grow grapes and make wines that radiate purity, vitality and elegance. David Paxton and Richard Freebairn have combined their decades of experience and embraced Biodynamic and Organic practices to produce the healthiest vines and highest quality wines. Biodynamics is the most advanced form of organic farming. We use natural preparations and composts to bring the soil and vines into balance, resulting in wines that truly showcase and preserve the unique vineyards of McLaren Vale."
5 Stars & 94/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, January 2017 (2014 Vintage)
"A wonderfully expressed shiraz, the fragrant bouquet shows blackberry, raspberry jam, cocoa and spicy oak characters with hints of tobacco and violet. The palate is concentrated and succulent, and delivers fleshy mouthfeel and velvety texture, finishing superbly long and delicious. At its best: now to 2022."
90/100 Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front, July 2015 (2014 Vintage)
"McLaren Vale shiraz, biodynamically/organically grown. This release is far more straight-forward. It’s a soft, sweet-fruited, chug-a-lug style but with more weight and concentration than those words usually imply. Blackberry jam, licorice, a touch of burnt sugar and fragrant dried herbs. Mellifluous. Has a puppy-dog readiness to be enjoyed now."
4 Stars & 17.5+/20 Raymond Chan, January 2017 (2014 Vintage)
"Very full, near impenetrable black-red colour with purple hues on the rim. The nose is very fine and tightly bound with aromas of dark raspberry and blackberry fruit along with black pepper, spice and liquorice at the core. The aromatics are soft and harmonious, reveal notes of eucalypt with aeration. Medium-full bodied, the fruit flavours of dark raspberries and blackberries are firm in concentration and well-bound, forming a packed heart. Nuances of spice, pepper and liquorice add interest, with eucalyptus notes emerging. The wine has good presence and depth with well-balance tannin extraction and alcohol power driving the palate to a long, solid finish of black fruits. This is a concentrated, firm Shiraz with weight and good structure. It will develop over the next 6-8 years. Match with slow-cooked game meat dishes. 100% Shiraz, from four of the six ‘Paxton’ vineyards, destemmed and fermented to 14.5% alc., the wine aged 12 months in new and seasoned French oak barriques. Certified NASAA biodynamic."
