5 Stars & 18.5/20 Raymond Chan, June 2015 (2014 Vintage)
"Very dark, deep, black-hued ruby-red colour, a little lighter on rim. The nose is elegant in proportion and well-concentrated with aroma of ripe dark red berry fruit entwined with black cherry, plum and spicy oak. Layers of liquorice, spices, soy sauce and herbs emerge from the core with aeration. Medium-bodied, the palate features rich, plush, ripe fruit flavours of dark red berries, black cherries and plums entwined with herbs, spices liquorice and pepper. The fruit succulence is enhanced by discreet acidity, and is balanced by fine-grained, supple tannin extraction. The structure has the firmness and drive to carry the flavours to a softly concentrated, long lingering finish of plums, cherries and liquorice. This is a rich, plush, dark-fruited Pinot Noir with complexing herb nuances and fine structure. Match with lamb, beef and venison over the next 5-6+ years. Clones 667, 777, Abel and 6, from the ‘Wharekauhau’, ‘East Base’, ‘Clouston’ and ’Winery’ vineyards, fermented with 24% whole clusters to 14.1% alc., the wine aged 11 months in 28% new oak."
96/100 Bob Campbell MW (2014 Vintage)
"Supple, fruit-driven Pinot Noir with succulent Black Doris plum, dark cherry and spicy oak flavours. There is also a suggestion of liquorice and spice. Quite intense with a silken texture. Accessible and appealing wine."
4 1/2 Stars Michael Cooper (2014 Vintage)
"This is typically an enticingly perfumed, notably elegant, rich and harmonious red. Most but not all of the grapes come from the company's own vineyards – Palliser, Om Santi, Clouston, Pinnacles and East Base – where the vines range up to over 20 years old. Maturation is for a year in French oak barriques (partly new). The 2014 vintage is refined, with a fragrant, floral bouquet. Mouthfilling, it has vibrant, ripe cherry, plum and spice flavours, showing good, savoury complexity, and a harmonious, finely textured finish. Still youthful, it's well worth cellaring to 2017+."
