Winery notes (2016 Vintage)
"We have done everything in our powers to nurture the strong-minded fruit into a true expression of the region. We have cut no corners in the winemaking process, and have handpicked, wild fermented and meticulously blended this snapshot of 2016. We are truly proud of this strong fighting Pinot Noir that has survived the elements of the most southerly wine making region in the world. Open a bottle and enjoy our ‘Neck of the Woods’."
5 Stars & 94/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, April 2018 (2016 Vintage)
"A beautifully styled pinot, the inviting bouquet shows fragrant aromas of dark cherry, raspberry, toasted almond and dark mushroom with a hint of floral lift. The palate is concentrated and plush, offering excellent weight and texture, brilliantly structured by fine, chalky tannins. Engaging, sturdy and lingering. At its best: now to 2021."
5 Stars & 18.5-/20 Raymond Chan, April 2018 (2016 Vintage)
"Dark, deep ruby-red colour with some depth, a little lighter on the rim. The nose is full and voluminous with deep and well-concentrated aromas of ripe black cherry and black berried fruits entwined with a layering of savoury dried herbs and complexing whole bunch stalk perfumes. This has a firm and deep core. Medium-full bodied, the palate is elegant in proportion with rich and juicy fruit flavours of savoury dark-red and black cherry and berry fruit harmoniously melded with subtle notes of dried herbs and whole bunch stalk elements. The flavours show good depth and intensity forming a fine core, and the fruit is supported by fine-grained, flowery tannin extraction with soft, balanced acidity. The structure carries the wine to a lingering, fine-textured, dry finish. This Pinot Noir has voluminous fruit aromatics and an elegant, finely concentrated, sweet fruit with complex savoury detail and a fine-structured palate. Match with casseroles and coq au vin over the next 6+ years. A blend of clones 5. 115 and Abel from Gibbston, vines planted 2002, fermented with 35% whole bunches to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 13 months in 25% new French oak. 200 dozen made."
4 1/2 Stars Michael Cooper (2016 Vintage)
"Offering good value, the 2016 vintage is a single-vineyard red, grown at Gibbston and matured for over a year in French oak casks (25 per cent new). Deep ruby, it is sturdy and firmly structured, with a fragrant bouquet, concentrated, ripe, berryish, spicy flavours, fresh acidity, and excellent depth and complexity. Still very youthful, it should be at its best mid-2019+."
