Gold Medal – Royal Melbourne Wine Awards 2022
The Cliff Edge Shiraz by Mount Langi Ghiran is now reaping the rewards of vine age. Generally a younger vine Shiraz as compared to the Langi Shiraz, these vines are now starting to come into their own.
Winery notes (2020 Vintage)
"The 2020 Cliff Edge Cabernet Merlot is sourced from a selection of blocks across the historic Mount Langi Ghiran vineyard situated in the Grampians region of Victoria. The combination of Langi’s cool climates, old vines and granite soils produces wines with great intensity, purity and finesse.
Aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, sarsaparilla root and fresh leather. On the palate, black fruits framed by violets. Generous herbaciousness, bay laurel and earthy flavours supported by firm acidity and supple tannins.
Fermentation method: Small open top fermenters. 100% whole berry. A mixture of plunging and pump-overs were used during fermentation. An average of 2-3 weeks total time on skins. Natural yeasts were used and once ferment was complete the wines were pressed to tank to settle overnight and then transferred to barrels to complete MLF. 18-month barrel maturation in French barriques, 30% new."
96/100 Jeni Port, James Halliday's Wine Companion, August 2022 (2020 Vintage)
"Whole-berry wild fermentation in concrete, both small open-topped and large closed fermenters. Left 14 days on skins, matured 14 months in French barriques (30% new). Often cited as a benchmark cool-climate shiraz, there’s no denying this is yet another impressive, elegant shiraz from a strong vintage. Boasts refined richness and a depth of flavour that is well-matched to a vivacious personality. Fruit is the star, with flecks of pepper and spice assisted by plump tannins. That’s a WOW!."
93/100 Ray Jordan, WinePilot.com, January 2023 (2020 Vintage)
"There is such a vibrant energy and purity about the shiraz from this vineyard. This one is excellent with lively red fruit characters on the nose and a little spicy cool climate character. Aromas of plum and cherry with just a hint of African violet. The palate is quite tightly structured with the fine chalky tannins holding the whole thing together."
92/100 Vinous (2020 Vintage)
"Bright ruby. Spice-tinged dark berry liqueur, cola, mocha and floral scents and a hint of sandalwood on the fragrant nose. Juicy blueberry, cassis and espresso flavours show fine definition and turn sweeter as the wine opens up. Sneaky tannins add shape to the persistent finish, which hangs on with very good, spicy persistence. This bottling consistently punches well above its weight compared to its fancy and pricier stablemates, which are among the standout bottlings of Shiraz from all of Australia. 30% new French oak barrels."
93/100 Christina Pickard, Wine Enthusiast, July 2023 (2020 Vintage)
"From the granite soils and cool climates of the Grampians mountains, this baby brother to Langi's premium Shiraz provides excellent value. Highly peppery from first sniff, it also offers fresh red and black berry fruit underpinned by tar, eucalyptus and a touch of vanillin oak. There's juicy, satiny succulence to the midweight palate. Pure, firm, fresh and balanced, this is just what Aussie Syrah should be."
