Winery notes (2016 Vintage)
"The grapes of superior budwood clones for this classical variety were sourced from a selection of vineyards in the Hawkes Bay: the low vigour, free draining alluvial loams of Maraekakaho, the sandy soils Meeanee district, and the gravelly soils of Gimblett Gravels wine growing region.

Each vineyard parcel was vinified separately. The juice was barrel fermented, with 40% undergoing malolactic fermentation to achieve a smooth buttery texture. Thereafter each parcel spent ten months in oak (67% French, 33% American, of which 27% was new wood), with frequent lees stirring for enhanced complexity. The final wine was composed from selected batches to achieve the desired wine style, and then rested before bottling under screwcap during February 2016.

This excellent Chardonnay is highly appealing, with pronounced yellow stonefruit and ginger spice flavours, vanilla, cashew nut and brioche notes. Barrel fermentation and ten months aging in quality oak has also conferred lovely weight and complexity. Enjoy with your favourite chicken or pork dish, or cellar judiciously for 3-4 years."

4 Stars Michael Cooper (2016 Vintage)
"Mills Reef's middle-tier Chardonnay. The attractive 2016 vintage was fermented and matured for 10 months in barrels (two-thirds French, one-third American, 27 per cent new). Grown at Maraekakaho, Meeanee and in the Gimblett Gravels, it is an 'upfront' style, mouthfilling and fresh, with vibrant, peachy, citrusy flavours, showing good richness, mealy and toasty notes adding complexity, and a slightly buttery finish. Drink now onwards."
4 Stars & 17.5/20 Raymond Chan, April 2017 (2016 Vintage)
"Bright straw-yellow colour with pale gold hues, lighter on the rim. The nose is fresh and tightly bound with aromas of white peach and yellow stonefruits entwined with subtle nutty and toasty oak notes, and suggestions of flinty minerals. Medium-full bodied, the palate is fresh and lively with a core of white and yellow stonefruits interwoven with spicy, nutty oak and subtle flinty and minerally lees elements, The palate has a creamy barrel-ferment and lemon curd amalgam from MLF, which is balanced by zesty acidity. The wine flows with good energy and drive along a fine-textured line, leading to a long, lingering finish of stonefruits, oak spice and nutty notes. This is a youthfully fresh Chardonnay with white and yellow stonefruit flavours complexed by spicy and nutty oak, with creamy textures cut by fresh acidity. Match with seafood, poultry and pork over the next 4+ years. Fruit from sites in Maraekakaho, Meeanee and the Gimblett Gravels, fully barrel-fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 10 months in two-thirds French and one-third American oak, 27% new, undergoing batonnage and 40% MLF."
