Winery notes (2016 Vintage)
"This single-vineyard Merlot is a testament to our estate-grown Mere Road grapes trained on low-yielding vines in the renowned Gimblett Gravels of Hawkes Bay. The fruit was handpicked at optimum ripeness on 2nd April 2016 at 22.7° brix.

The grapes were destemmed, retaining whole berries which were cold soaked for two days in an open-top fermenter. The must was then inoculated with selected yeast and the cap plunged twice daily during ferment. The wine was allowed 17 days alcohol soak post ferment before pressing to barrel for aging in quality 100% French oak (34% new) for 17 months. The wine was left undisturbed for 5 months, with one gentle aerated racking. The final wine was polished with egg white fining, and pad filtered prior to bottling in late November 2017 under Stelvin screwcap.

This outstanding Merlot, from an exceptional vintage, shows great poise, exuding intense notes of ripened blackcurrant and spicy Black Doris plums, in harmony with silky smooth tannins and a wonderful freshness yielding a persistently long mocha finish. Ready for immediate enjoyment, it will also cellar gracefully to reward longer term enjoyment."

4 Stars & 18.0+/20 Raymond Chan, April 2018 (2016 Vintage)
"Dark, deep, black-hued ruby-red colour, a little lighter on the rim. The nose is elegant and fragrant with ethereal aromas of blackcurrants, blackberries and black plums entwined with dark herbs and fine, piquant oak. The aromatics build in intensity to form a deep, herb and minerally core. Medium-bodied, the palate is elegant in proportion with good depth of rich and lively flavours of blackcurrant and blackberry fruit, forming a tight, well-concentrated core. Subtle layers of dark herbs and nutty oak add to the interest. The fruit is enlivened by bright acidity and supported by fine-grained tannin extraction and structure. This has good grip and the wine carries with energy and tension to a long finish of black fruits, herbs, a touch of pepper and toast. This is an elegant, but concentrated Merlot with aromatic black fruits and herb notes with nutty oak, on a bright and lively palate with good grip. Match with herb-marinated red meat dishes over the next 5-6 years. Fruit from the Mere Road vineyard fermented with whole berries to 12.5% alc., the wine aged 17 months in 34% new French oak."
