Winery notes (2015 Vintage)
"2015 was an excellent vintage in Hawkes Bay, allowing the fruit to be picked unhurried at optimal ripeness. The grapes for this superior Chardonnay were sourced from our ultra-premium vineyard site at Mere Road Vineyard.

The fruit was handpicked on 26 March 2015, whole-bunch pressed and transferred into barrel for alcoholic fermentation with specially selected yeasts to optimise the Chardonnay flavour profile while adding interest and depth. Approximately 25% of the wine was put through malolactic fermentation to bring enhanced and softened texture. Both the MLF and the non-malo portions were blended, and aged in quality 100% French oak (46% new) for 10 months sur lie, with frequent stirring to release important flavour components.

This outstanding Chardonnay from our superior Gimblett Gravels vineyard has striking intensity, complexity and balance. Tropical peach, fig and honey flavours abound, intertwined with hints of cashew, a judicious seasoning of toasty oak and a lovely rich creamy texture. Already delicious, it will continue to evolve and delight with cellaring."

5 Stars Michael Cooper (2015 Vintage)
"Mills Reef's flagship Chardonnay is consistently rewarding and a classic regional style. The 2015 is a top vintage. Bright, light lemon/green, it is fragrant, with rich, vibrant grapefruit and stone-fruit flavours, a slightly buttery note, and a long, very harmonious finish. Already delicious, it's a very elegant and age-worthy wine."
5 Stars & 95/100 Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review, March 2018 (2015 Vintage)
"Rich, creamy chardonnay in a bold and flavoursome style with impressive weight and a smooth texture. Quite a complex wine with toast, ginger, peach, and nectarine with a seasoning of classy oak."
5 Stars & 18.5/20 Raymond Chan, April 2018 (2015 Vintage)
"Full, even, light golden-yellow colour, a little lighter on the edge. The nose is well-proportioned with good depth of ripe white and yellow stonefruit aromas harmoniously interwoven with nutty oak, along with savoury creamy barrel-ferment elements. This combines clarity of expression with good intensity. Medium-full bodied, the palate is rounded with a softly packed heart of ripe yellow stonefruits along with integrated nutty notes, and subtle creamy barrel-ferment nuances. The palate is rich, with good mouthfeel and presence, but the flavours are stylishly restrained. The flavours carry with good underlying power to a soft, lingering, plush finish of stonefruits and nuts. This is a rich, plush and rounded Chardonnay with yellow stonefruit and nutty flavours and subtle creaminess on a palate with good presence. Serve with roasted pork and veal over the next 4+ years. Fruit from the Mere Road vineyard, hand-picked, WBP and fully barrel-fermented to 13.7% alc., the wine aged 10 months in 46% new French oak with approx. 25% MLF."
94/100 Cameron Douglas MS, May 2018 (2015 Vintage)
"Bold, rich, expressive, fruity, oaky and appealing with great aromatics. Dry, full-bodied and richly textured Chardonnay with many appealing flavours of roasted yellow stone fruits then vanilla, lees derived textures and wood spices. Complex and flavourful with ripe fruit, fine wood tannins and long finish. Drink now and through 2022."
