5 Stars Michael Cooper (2013 Vintage)
"Estate-grown in the Matheson Vineyard, the powerful, deeply coloured 2013 vintage is a classy red that should unfold well for many years. It has concentrated plum, blackcurrant and spice flavours, with finely integrated, nutty oak and good tannin backbone. Dense, but not tough, with impressive depth, ripeness and structure, it should be at its best 2017+."
5 Stars & 19.0-/20 Raymond Chan, November 2014 (2013 Vintage)
"Full, deep, near impenetrable black-hued purple-red colour. The nose is elegantly proportioned with tight and concentrated aromas of ripe blackberries, redcurrants and plums, unveiling sweet floral, herb and complexing earthy nuances. This is fruit focussed and pure with finely integrated, unobtrusive oak. Medium-full bodied, the fruit flavours of ripe black berry and black plums are expressed with precision and intensity. The tannin extraction is very refined and the wine flows with excellent linearity, leading to a dry, textured, lingering finish of ripe redcurrant fruit intermixed with herbs and oak. This is an elegant an precise, penetrating Merlot with ripe fruits and refined, dry tannins. Serve with roasted lamb and beef, or hard cheeses over the next 8-10 years. 90% Merlot and 10% Malbec from the ‘Matheson’ vineyard in the Red Metals Triangle, fermented with a high portion of whole berries to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 12 months in 50% new French oak. 300 dozen made."
Sue Courtney, wineoftheweek.com (2013 Vintage)
"Dark red with a deep almost black core. The bouquet is very aromatic – perhaps a bit of volatile acidity, also black tea with a fruit infusion, hints of liquorice and the most subtle suggestion of mint. In the mouth the texture is silky and fine. There’s a delightful touch of chocolate, barely there mint, liquorice tea, red plums, bottled cherries and it’s quite cedary on the finish. From a light year according to Nikolai, this is on the medium side of full-bodied with a little bottle development that has allowed the tannins to become so smooth. A wine to pour into a big glass and muse over with time to spare."
