Winery notes (2014 Vintage)
"The first in a line of early 20th century battleships bestowed with the motto “fear god and dreadnought” and embodying a supreme combination of speed and power, Dreadnought denotes our steepest and most breathtaking hillside Syrah vineyards. The 2014 Dreadnought is has excellent fruit accessibility with a rich voluminous palate tamed with a streak of acidity and a mineral edge derived from the stem influence all supported by a classic Dreadnought tannin structure. The aromas are lifted with black and blue fruits and a spicy gaminess of the stems creating a complex and harmonious wine with plenty of aging potential. Stylish, finely balanced this wine is beautiful now but will reward careful cellaring. We evisage graceful development as the fine boned structure becomes more apparent and great complexity ensues.
5 Stars & 95/100 Bob Campbell MW, May 2016 (2014 Vintage)
"Moderately dense syrah with raspberry, cranberry, violet, dried herb, pepper, old leather and spice/anise flavours. A core of sweet fruit is balanced by peppery tannins. An elegant rather than a blockbuster wine with obvious power. Drink 2016 to 2028."
5 Stars Michael Cooper (2014 Vintage)
"Estate-grown at the eastern end of the island, the 2014 vintage was matured in French oak casks (30 per cent new). Bold and youthful in colour, it is a classy, highly concentrated, well-structured red, with dense, ripe blackcurrant, plum and spice flavours, a hint of liquorice and fine-grained tannins. It should be long-lived; open 2019+."
5 Stars & 95/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, April 2017 (2014 Vintage)
"A spectacular expression of the variety, this is impressively ripe and gratifying, exhibiting mixed berry compote, mocha, dried flower and toasted hazelnut characters on the nose. The palate is equally satisfying with delectable fruit flavours and seductive oak complexity, wonderfully enhanced by velvety mouthfeel and supple tannins. The wine is powerful and graceful at the same time, and flows seamlessly to a lingering delicious finish. At its best: now to 2022."
5 Stars & 19.0/20 Raymond Chan, April 2017 (2014 Vintage)
"Very dark, deep, black-hued ruby-red colour with youthful purple hues. This has a full and softly concentrated nose with aromas of ripe blackberry and dark raspberry fruit entwined with plums and liquorice, unfolding black pepper and lifted violet and dark-red florals, and a layering of earth, spices and oak. Full-bodied, the palate has rich and deeply concentrated, mouthfilling flavours of ripe blackberries and dark raspberries interwoven with plums, black pepper, liquorice and pices. Subtle dark-red florals and cedary oak elements emerge as the wine flows along a fine-grained, structured line. The fruit richness is balanced by the refined tannin extraction, with integrated acidity enhancing the harmony. The wine carries to a long and sustained, elegantly concentrated finish of blackberries, liquorice, pepper and spice. This is a rich, concentrated Syrah with ripe blackberry, raspberry and pepper flavours complexed by floral and spice notes on a fine-structured palate. Serve with slow-cooked game meat dishes over the next 8-10 years. 100% Syrah from 6 sites, predominantly destemmed and indigenous yeast fermented with a very small portion of whole bunches to 14.6% alc., the wine aged 18 months in 35% new French oak puncheons."
