Winery notes (2017 Vintage)
"Named after the Maori verb meaning ‘to mix’, RANU is a careful co-fermentation of Pinot Gris, Riesling and Gewurztraminer.

Aromas of beeswax, lemon, lime, red apple and delicate florals. On the palate, lemon sherbet, nashi pear with crisp acidity giving lovely focus. This wine shows great complexity and has wonderful texture showing the best of all three varieties, which when combined produce a really fascinating wine.

This wine fulfils our team’s ongoing love of innovation while embracing the aromatic grape varieties that we are famous for. On the 11th of April we headed into the vineyards and picked a single bin each of Riesling, Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer from three different blocks.

The Pinot Gris was from the Barnsley block carefully tended by Biddy Barnsley. Located in the Waihopai valley, the clay soils and low yields provide weight and concentration.

Our only Riesling comes from our company-owned Waihopai vineyard. Viticulturist Mark Ludemann ensures the vines are kept in balance, only producing moderate crops following a light leaf-plucking that lead to a long, slow ripening period and great flavour development.

The Gewurztraminer was picked from the Woodward Vineyard just a few hundred metres down the road from the winery. Here again the clay soils produce flavoursome fruit with considerable weight and texture. The vineyard is carefully tended by Peter Woodward.

Once in the winery, the three varieties were whole-bunch pressed together and the resulting juice settled for just a few hours before being racked into old oak for fermentation. Fermentation was allowed to occur spontaneously and took several months to complete during which time there was no winemaking intervention. The wine was bottled here at the winery on the 17th of August."
93/100 Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review, December 2017 (2017 Vintage)
"A blend of pinot gris, riesling and gewürztraminer co-fermented to produce a unique and interesting medium-dry white with citrus, floral, tree fruit, pear and apple flavours. A pure and delicate white with an ethereal texture and lingering finish."
92/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, August 2017 (2017 Vintage)
"This charmingly appealing wine is a blend of third each of these noble aromatic grapes; the elegantly lifted bouquet shows yellow stone fruit, lemon peel, mandarin and apple blossom notes. It is beautifully weighted and rounded on the palate with fine texture and bright acidity, finishing persistent and pleasingly dry. At its best: now to 2021."
4 Stars & 18/20 Raymond Chan, December 2017 (2017 Vintage)
"Bright, light straw-yellow colour with slight green hues, lighter on the rim. The nose is softly packed with aromas of savoury yellow stonefruits with rose-petal florals, root ginger and earth, entwined with nutty barrel-ferment and flinty lees complexities and mineral elements. Dry to taste and medium-bodied, the palate features a firm core that unfolds an array of savoury stonefruit s melded with rose-petal florals, root ginger and an amalgam of nutty oak and leesy minerals. The palate has richness with a suggestion of unctuous, balanced by crisp, mouthwatering acidity lending energy and drive. The wine flows along a fine-textured line, leading to a complex, savoury, but aromatic finish. This is a complex co-fermented blend of Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer and Riesling with savoury stonefruit, aromatic floral and ginger, and nutty notes on a rich, but refreshing, thirst-quenching palate. Match with Mediterranean and Middle Eastern fare over the next 3-4 years. A co-fermentation of equal parts of three varieties, the Pinot Gris from the ‘Barnsley’ block in Waihopi, the Riesling from the company’s Waihopi vineyard, and the Gewurztraminer from the ‘Woodward’ vineyard nearby the winery on Alabama Road, the fruit WBP, and indigenous yeast fermented to 13.0% alc. and 5.8 g/L RS. 50 dozen made."
Yvonne Lorkin, December 2017 (2017 Vintage)
"Named after the Maori verb meaning ‘to mix’, a single bin each of riesling, pinot gris and gewürztraminer was hand harvested on April 11th from different blocks, blended and fermented wild, to create a wine that commemorates Lawson’s 25th anniversary. It’s a glorious, gussy-up of citrus, peach and musky magic. Juicy and succulent, it’s the apple, nashi and lemon verbena notes that lift it to next level loveliness."
