Winery notes (2016 Vintage)
"In 1990, Maté Brajkovich reworked the land and planted a new vineyard of Chardonnay vines on the site of the original vineyard that he and his family purchased in March 1944. The first grapes from this vineyard were harvested in March 1993, the year following Maté’s death. The resulting wine was released in November 1994 to coincide with celebrations marking the Fiftieth Anniversary of the Brajkovich Family’s arrival at Kumeu River.

The Mate’s Vineyard is usually the most reserved and unyielding when young with a nose that is very closed, just giving hints of the golden queen peach and mineral notes that we expect from Mate’s Vineyard. On the palate however, the flavour is very concentrated and distinctly richer than the other 2016 wines, but maintaining a perfect balance and freshness that sets this wine apart and makes it wonderful. This is a wine of immense concentration that will be very long lived."
5 Stars & 96/100 Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review, September 2017 (2016 Vintage)
"Quite a concentrated chardonnay with lime, citrus, hazelnut, bran biscuit and a suggestion of tropical fruits, mango and pineapple. A weighty wine with impressive length and complexity. Good now but will obviously respond well to bottle age."
5 Stars Michael Cooper (2016 Vintage)
"This extremely classy single-vineyard wine is Kumeu River's flagship. It is made entirely from the best of the fruit harvested from Mate's Vineyard, planted in 1990 on the site of the original Kumeu River vineyard purchased by Mate Brajkovich in 1944. Strikingly similar to Kumeu River Estate Chardonnay, but slightly more opulent and concentrated, it offers the same rich and harmonious flavours of grapefruit, peach and butterscotch, typically with a stronger seasoning of new French oak (about 30 per cent). For winemaker Michael Brajkovich, the hallmark of Mate's Vineyard is 'a pear-like character on the nose, with richness and length on the palate after two to three years'. The 2016 vintage was hand-picked, barrel-fermented and oak-aged for 11 months. Bright, light lemon/green, it is still a baby, with mouthfilling body and vibrant, very youthful, citrusy, peachy flavours, slightly toasty, complex, lively and long. A tightly structured wine with obvious potential, it's best opened 2020+."
95+/100 Gary Walsh, The Wine Front, December 2017 (2016 Vintage)
"There’s plenty of white Burgundy around this wine, which is the sort of thing I don’t usually like to say, but there you have it. Struck match, spice, white flowers, oatmeal and cream, rich Chardonnay fruit. Medium bodied, glossy but flinty with it, lime acidity and biscuits, tang and vigour and a very long finish. Beautiful."
5 Stars & 19.0+/20 Raymond Chan, February 2018 (2016 Vintage)
"Brilliant straw-yellow colour with light golden hues, a little lighter on the rim. The nose is a little restrained in expression but with softly full and voluminous, well-packed aromas of ripe white and yellow stonefruits, nectarines peaches and citrus fruit harmoniously entwined with creamy barrel-ferment and nutty oak, with soft, chalky mineral detail. This has elegance and completeness. Medium-full bodied, the palate is stylishly rich with balanced and harmoniously entwined flavours of white stonefruits with peach and citrus notes. The flavours are rich and detailed with soft creamy and nutty oak elements, and balanced by fine, lacy acidity. The wine flows effortlessly along a very fine line, leading to a soft, near-ethereal, lingering finish. This is a beautifully harmonious and complete Chardonnay with white stonefruit, peach and citrus fruit flavours along with creamy, nutty oak, and fine acidity. Serve with poultry, pork and veal dishes over the next 6+ years. Hand-picked fruit from the ‘Mate’s Vineyard’, WBP and indigenous yeast barrel-fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 11 months in 30% new oak with 100% MLF."
