Assyrtiko is the white grape variety native to Santorini in Greece. It was on vacation here that Peter Barry discovered the variety and thought it may suit his vineyards back in the Clare Valley. On returning home and making enquiries he found that there was no Assyrtiko growing there, so he set about importing and establishing rootstock. This is the fourth vintage and first to be available in New Zealand. Made as a fresh, dry white. Maybe think a softly textured dry Riesling. Flavours of lemon blossom, honeydew melon with a lovely mineral purity. Intriguingly different and very good.
Joelle Thomson, May 2018 (2017 Vintage)
"This wine is awesome… The Greek grape Assyrtiko originally comes from the hot volcanic island of Santorini, which is may seem like an unusual place to grow a white grape with high acidity – and that’s what makes this wine taste so fresh and refreshing. Australian winemaker Peter Barry tasted it on his travels around the world and liked it so much that he decided to import some vines to Aussie where he made his first vintage of Assyrtiko in the Clare Valley in 2014… It was a total experiment back then and in 2016 he made enough to sell and the rest is history. This wine is a ripple in the new wave of dry white, crisp, refreshing, lemon tasting wines. It’s a lovely lively light white – tasty and delicious."
4 Stars & 18.0/20 Raymond Chan, May 2018 (2017 Vintage)
"Very pale straw-yellow colour, near colourless on the rim. The nose is very fresh and tightly bound with aromas of white stonefruits, along with subtle citrus fruit and white floral elements and nuances of nuts Dry to taste, the palate has a tight core of white florals, citrus fruit, nuts and herbs and nuances of saline. The palate has a smooth-textured line and good palate weight, with crisp, refreshing acidity. The wine has good drive and linearity and carries to a long finish of stonefruits and florals. This has Arneis-like characters along with Riesling overtones and good palate weight. A seafood wine to enjoy over the next 2-3+ years. The fourth crop of this variety made from fruit from cuttings from Santorini Island in Greece, planted in the ‘Lodge Hill’ vineyard. Fermented in tank to 12.5% alc., TA 7.8 g/L and pH 2.9."
90/100 Gary Walsh, The Wine Front, November 2016 (2016 Vintage)
"The first commercial release of this grape in Australia. I believe many of the vines are basket pruned as well. Interesting. After a tiny make in 42 bottles in 2014, up to about 2,600 bottles in 2015, there’s now just under 500 dozen produced. Assyrtiko from Santorini is one of the most distinctive styles of dry white. What of the Clare Valley?

Well, it’s quite a lot like a Clare Valley Riesling in many respects, yet different. Has a little floral perfume, green pear and lemon/lime tang, some green herbs in the mix, a pebble strewn texture, and a refreshing finish of fair length. It’s not fruity, as such, and would be super with a plate of squid or similar. It’s a promising debut."
