The name 'Isole e Olena' came about in the 1950s when two adjoining estates, 'Isole' and 'Olena', were purchased by the De Marchi family and combined to form one. The history of both estates dates back many hundreds of years, and the earliest documentation of the village of Olena goes as far back as the 12th century. During the 1950s, the De Marchi family planted new specialised vineyards and expanded the cellars. Today, the estate is run by Paolo De Marchi and his wife Marta. Paolo comes from a family with three generations of winemaking experience in the northern part of Piemonte and his older son, Luca, now runs the family estate there, Proprieta Sperino.
91/100 Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate (2013 Vintage)
"The 2013 Chianti Classico wears oversized aromas of dark fruit and cherry that suit the wine very nicely. This is an outwardly generous and beautifully intense wine that mirrors all the high qualities of this celebrated vintage. Red fruit notes of cherry and cassis are woven within a greater context that sees crushed mineral and spice. The growing season was slow and steady leading to perfectly ripe fruit. Isole e Olena adds a bit of Canaiolo to the Sangiovese and those deep, dark fruit elements of the added grape come out strongly in this vintage."
92/100 James Suckling (2013 Vintage)
"A delicate and subtlety fruity Chianti Classico with dried cherry, strawberry and citrus. Full body, firm tannins, limestone and a fruity, bright finish. Always a balanced wine. Drink or hold."
90/100 Antonio Galloni, Vinous (2013 Vintage)
"The 2013 Chianti Classico brings together the fresh aromatics of a cool year along with lovely mid-palate pliancy. The flavours are bright, high-toned and decidedly leaning towards the red-fruit end of the spectrum. Crushed flowers, herbs and anise grace the soft, aromatic finish. The overall impression is of lovely mid-palate juiciness, even if the technical stats suggest a lighter-bodied wine. That is why wine can never be measured by numbers alone. Rain in September decimated the Syrah harvest. The little bit that was salvaged was used in the Chianti Classico."
90/100 Wine Enthusiast (2013 Vintage)
"You'll find aromas of underbrush, clove, red berry, blue flower and a whiff of toast on this elegant expression of the 2013 vintage. The bright, sleek palate delivers juicy wild cherry, ground pepper and coffee alongside fresh acidity and polished, fine-grained tannins."
