Howard Park’s award winning Chardonnay is handcrafted from grapes sourced from the cool climate region of Western Australia’s Great Southern. The cool growing conditions produce highly flavoured and tightly structured Chardonnay grapes from which only the best free run juice is selected each vintage to become part of the Howard Park Chardonnay. The juice selected is placed on French oak barrels with a percentage of the barrels lees stirred for period determined each vintage to enhance the savoury textural characters. The remaining barrels are sulphured to preserve the delicate flavour and structure of the Chardonnay and to restrict the occurrence of malolactic fermentation.The Howard Park Chardonnay is a modern style of Australian’ barrel-fermented Chardonnay: elegant, lean and sophisticated.

“Based on the last entry, it should come as little surprise to find this solo effort from Howard Park also impressed the judges. In common with its Marchand & Burch counterpart, this Chardonnay also features Porongurup fruit, but this time as part of a blend with grapes from fellow Great Southern sub-regions Mount Barker and Denmark. 2012 was a year that sparked excitable noises from winemakers across Australia and the western end of this vast continent proved no exception. With consistently warm, dry conditions during the growing season, Howard Park’s cool 380m altitude, south facing Mount Barrow vineyard provided the majority of fruit for this vintage.”

"Bright straw-yellow colour with some depth. This has a very tight and concentrated nose, with great clarity and focus of white stonefruit aromas complexed by penetrating, refined layers of gunflint reduction and minerals. Oaking is balanced and integral. Great intensity, depth and concentration on palate, reflecting the nose. Mineral purity from the sulphides, and matched by the rich stonefruit depth. The acidity is fresh and energises the wine, and this has considerable underlying drive. An excellent contemporary style with 6+ years ahead. Hand-picked fruit from Mount Barker, Porongurup and Denmark in the Great Southern area, WBP and indigenous yeast barrel-fermented to 13.0% alc., the wine aged 9 months in 30% new French oak, undergoing batonnage and partial MLF."
