Winery notes (2017 Vintage)
"Riesling from Blocks 2 and 4 of The Elms vineyard was carefully hand-picked, whole bunch pressed and fermented with indigenous yeasts. The fermentation was stopped by chilling when the optimal balance was achieved between the acidity, alcohol and residual sugar (63g/L). Careful winemaking with minimal processing highlights the crisp natural acidity and the Riesling characters are delicately poised in the low alcohol of 8.5%.

Tropical fruit and ripe citrus compliment gentle spice and mineral notes. The palate leads with a burst of sweetness like biting into the first of the season’s most delicious tree ripened nectarine. The residual sugar immediately becomes secondary to the intensity of flavour that persists for what seems an eternity. Our characteristic bright acidity provides a knife edge balance and a crisp finish. Remarkably light (8.5% Alc) with appealing minerality."
5 Stars & 18.5+/20 Raymond Chan, September 2017 (2017 Vintage)
"Very pale straw colour with slight green hues. The nose is very fine, elegant and tightly bound with white florals, lime fruit and minerals. Medium-dry to medium in taste, and light bodied, the palate is tightly bound with limes, minerals florals and honied notes. The mouthfeel is zesty as, very fine textured from the fruit extract, lovely sugar and acid balance, the acidity soft and ripe. A beautiful coolness, this is very refined. 8.5% alc., 63 g/L RS, TA 8.8 g/L and pH 2.87. 500 cases made."
Joelle Thomson, December 2017 (2017 Vintage)
"It’s tempting to think Central Otago is all about Pinot Noir; after all, there’s plenty of it down there – 80% of the region’s vineyards are planted with Pinot, but here’s a white that shows the great potential of sizzlingly fresh, succulently seductive Rieslings from the world’s most southern wine region. It’s one of two Rieslings made by Blair Walter at Felton Road, who puts this wine’s most vibrant fruit forward in this flavoursome drop with its ripe limes, white peach and nectarine tastes. Like a great Riesling from the Mosel in Germany, this beautiful Bannockburn Riesling walks a precarious tightrope between its fresh high acidity, its low alcohol (8.5% ABV) and its high but balanced residual sugar. Not that you’d think of this wine as ‘sweet’. It’s long succulent finish keeps the mouth watering for more."
