Winery notes (2017 Vintage)
"The individual vineyard parcels were hand harvested and whole cluster pressed. Only low juice yields were taken. The unsettled juice was gravity fed to barrel for fermentation with indigenous yeasts and post ferment some barrels were allowed to undergo malolactic fermentation to naturally soften the acidity. The finished wine was left on lees until bottling with occasional lees stirring.

This is an elegant, complex and creamy textured Chardonnay which displays vineyard derived complexity and flavours of peach, grapefruit and cashew. Naturally made with a ‘hands-off’ approach it is both food friendly and age-worthy and vividly exhibits the complexity of Bay View Chardonnay. Further interest is added with subtle oak and lees developing complexity from barrel ageing. Enjoy with rich seafood dishes, especially crayfish."
Reviews for the 2016 vintage below...
5 Stars Michael Cooper (2016 Vintage)
"Often one of the region's most distinguished Chardonnays. Fragrant, with a smoky, 'struck match' bouquet, the classy, youthful 2016 vintage was grown and hand-picked at two sites in northern Hawke's Bay (including the Esk Valley home block), and fermented and matured for 11 months in French oak barriques (30 per cent new). Weighty, vibrant and tightly structured, it has deep grapefruit-like flavours, biscuity, mealy notes adding complexity, fresh acidity and obvious potential; best drinking 2019+."
5 Stars & 19.0/20 Raymond Chan, September 2017 (2016 Vintage)
"Very pale straw colour, near colourless. The nose shows powerful and intense white stonefruit aromas with mealy and nutty layers, white florals and gunflint, along with unfolding citrus fruit, toasty and nutty oak. A steely freshness guides the fruit expression and depth. On palate, this is rich and powerful, but taut and refined, with wonderfully rich white stonefruits, along with saline suggestion interwoven with nutty oak, toast and smoke. The mouthfeel features fine acidity and very fine textures, and the wine carries to a very long citrus and flinty notes, with a mouthwatering finish. Lovely richness, vitality and flavour intensity incorporating a little flintiness from whole solids fermentation. Clone 95 fruit with a small portion of clone 15, 70% from the ‘Howards’ and 30% from the ‘Home’ vineyard, hand-picked and WBP, indigenous yeast barrel-fermented to 13.3% alc., the wine aged 11 months in 30% new French oak with some batonnage and partial MLF."
Sue Courtney, wineoftheweek.com, January 2018 (2016 Vintage)
"Tempting hazelnut and vanilla leesy notes fill the bouquet of this bright golden coloured wine. It’s one of those flinty reductive styles with loads of intrigue and fascination and while it seems quite linear to start with lifted lemon biscuit acidity, it’s actually quite mouthfilling and complex with elegant stonefruit and a spicy inflection to the cedary oak on the finish. Lovely to try now but will excel with a little more maturity."
