Winery notes (2015 Vintage)
"This wine was grown on the Barton Vineyard, Huangarua Road, Martinborough from vines 23 years old. A combination of deep alluvial gravels which the Martinborough Terraces are renowned for and a blend of many clones grown in a very sheltered spot always rewards us with a classic example of New World Pinot Noir.

It was open topped fermented using indigenous yeasts in traditional wooded cuvees, hand plunged every 12 hours, with a total vat time of 24 days. After pressing it was matured in 30% new French oak barriques for 18 months. It was fined using a minimum of egg white to protect the flavours and aid brightness in the glass without filtering, promoting soft mouth feel and texture. It has a unique site derived complexity combined with black cherry/plum fruit flavours. It will continue to develop for up to 10 years and will always be a wonderful counterpart to any game food."
95/100 Gary Walsh, The Wine Front, May 2017 (2015 Vintage)
"Pinot Noir is, I think, the grape where personal taste and foibles come into play the most. This is my favourite of the five 2015 Pinot releases from Escarpment. Grown on the Barton Vineyard, Haungarua Road, Martinborough. The vineyard is 23 years old. Longest time on skins here, with a total vat time of 23 days. 30% new oak. 65% whole bunch. Here’s a wine with a bit of the old ‘X-Factor’. Bold perfume of flowers and dried herbs, liquorice and dark fruit, brandy snaps, lavish spice. Medium bodied, almost an airy feel in the mouth, but grounded by firm black tea tannin and minerality, beautiful clear acidity, and a long perfumed finish."
5 Stars & 19.5+/20 Raymond Chan, April 2017 (2015 Vintage)
"Full, black-hearted ruby-red colour with slight purple hues, a little lighter on the rim, youthful in appearance. The nose is full and voluminous with vibrant, aromatic dark-red and black fruits, lifted with a complex amalgam of black florals, savoury whole cluster stalk elements, anise and dark herb elements. This has excellent depth and concentration allied to perfumed lift and complexity. Medium-full bodied, the palate is succulently rich with ripe black cherry and black-berried fruits along with aromatic dark-red, violet and black florals, underlined by subtle whole cluster stalk and dark herb detail. The palate has freshness and vibrancy with lacy acidity along with fine-grained tannin extraction and structure. As the wine flows, the acidity lifts the fruit aromatics and enriches the sweetness. This has power, vitality and energy, and carries to a sustained, succulent, complex finish. This is a beautifully rich, vibrant and powerful, but impeccably balanced Pinot Noir with aromatic black fruits and subtle layers of complexity. Match with lamb, beef and venison dishes over the next 8-10 years. A blend of many clones from the Barton ‘Te Rehua’ vineyard, Huangarua Road, vines 23 y.o., indigenous yeast fermented with 65% whole bunches to 13.9% alc., the wine spending 24 days on skins and aged 18 months in 30% new French oak barriques."
