Winery notes (2015 Vintage)
"This wine was grown on the Pahi Vineyard Princess Street, Martinborough from 28 year old vines. A combination of slightly heavier soils and a blend of clones, 10/5, Abel and Clone 5 always rewards us with this particular style; soft, ripe, pure fruit expressions in an exceedingly New World Pinot Noir.

It was open topped fermented using indigenous yeasts in traditional wooden cuvees, hand plunged every 12 hours, with a total vat time of 17 days. After pressing it was matured in 30% new French oak barriques for 18 months. It was bottled without fining or filtration to protect the flavours and promote a soft mouth feel and balance. It will continue to develop for up to 10 years and will always be a wonderful counterpart to any game food. Sadly this will be Escarpment’s last Pahi from this site. A 30 year relationship with this vineyard ended with the passing of Mr Jack McCreanor, one of nature’s gentlemen."
95/100 Gary Walsh, The Wine Front, May 2017 (2015 Vintage)
"Grown on the Pahi vineyard, Princess St, Martinborough. 28 year old vines. 30% new oak. 50% whole bunch. Press release says this is the last Pahi, with a 30 year relationship closing with the passing of the vineyard owner. Dark cherry, liquorice root, liberal spice, a dried flower perfume, some vanilla too. Medium bodied, dense and minerally tannin, a little roast meat and dried herb, beautiful dark fruit, precise and clean acidity, and a perfumed, dried herb strewn finish of superb length. A wonderful swansong."
5 Stars & 19.0+/20 Raymond Chan, April 2017 (2015 Vintage)
"Dark, deep, black-hearted ruby-red colour with slight purple hues, lighter on the edge. The nose is refined in expression with a core of ripe black cherry and berry fruit entwined with dark-red and black florals, with finely integrated savoury dark herb and whole cluster stalk suggestions. Subtle notes of liquorice emerge, and the aromatics grow in depth, intensity and volume with aeration. Medium to medium-full bodied, the palate has elegantly concentrated and intense flavours of black cherries and liquorice with subtle spice notes, unveiling black florals and integrated and harmoniously interwoven dark herb and whole bunch complexities. The palate has a concentrated core with fine-grained, flowery tannin structure and refined acidity. Floral elements unfold and carry through to an aromatic, lingering finish of finesse. This is an elegantly concentrated, refined Pinot Noir with ripe black fruits, florals, liquorice and spice notes, integrated with whole bunch detail and flowery structure. Match with wild duck and pork dishes over the next 6-8+ years. A blend of clones 10/5, Abel and 5 from the McCreanor ‘Pahi’ vineyard, Princess Street, vines 28 y.o., indigenous yeast fermented with 50% whole bunches to 13.1% alc., the wine spending 17 days on skins and aged 18 months in 30% new French oak barriques. This is the last ‘Pahi’ made by Escarpment."
