Winery notes (2015 Vintage)
"This wine was grown on the Cleland Vineyard Cambridge Street, Martinborough from 28 year old vines. A combination of deep alluvial gravels which the Martinborough Terraces are renowned for and a blend of Clones UCD 5, 6 and 13 always rewards us with savoury, complex, spicy wine.

It was open topped fermented using indigenous yeasts in traditional wooden cuvees, hand plunged every 12 hours, with a total vat time of 21 days. After pressing it was matured in 40% new French oak barriques for 18 months. It was bottled using a minimum of egg white to protect the avours and
aid brightness in the glass; without ltering, promoting soft mouth feel and texture. This is an outstanding example of classic Pinot Noir. It will continue to develop for up to 10 years and will always be a wonderful counterpart to any game food."
94/100 Gary Walsh, The Wine Front, May 2017 (2015 Vintage)
"From 28 year old vines on the Cleland Vineyard, Cambridge Road, Martinborough. 50% whole bunch and 40% new oak. A pleasure to taste these four expressions of Martinborough Pinot side by side. Spicy, cherry and red berry, dusting of sweet cinnamon oak, a little herb and earthiness, but a brighter expression of Martinborough here. Medium bodied, firm almost sappy acidity, grainy lightly drying sandy tannin, plenty of crunch and energy, and a bright strawberried finish of good length, with a slight herbal bitterness. Excellent now, and better again with a couple more years in bottle."
5 Stars & 19.0/20 Raymond Chan, April 2017 (2015 Vintage)
"Even, dark ruby-red colour, a little lighter on edge with a suggestion of garnet. The nose is softly full and beautifully balanced and integrated with harmonious aromas of savoury dark-red and black cherry fruit, along with earthy elements, dark and dried herbs, unfolding a soft layering of whole bunch stalk complexities, This ha subtle spicy and funky nuances and the nose is quite complete. Medium-full bodied, the palate has stylishly restrained flavours of ripe black-berried fruits in a complex amalgam of savoury whole bunch stalk, dark and dried herb notes with earthy and spicy elements. The fruit is encased by fine, grainy tannin extraction and considerable structure that carries the wine to a long, textural finish of black fruits and savoury and earthy flavours. This is a complex, savoury black-fruited Pinot Noir with earth, whole bunch and herbal complexities on a well-structured and textural palate. Match with casseroles and slow cooked game meat dishes over the next 8-9+ years. A blend of clones 5, 6 and 13 from the Cleland ‘Kiwa’ vineyard, Cambridge Road, vines 28 y.o., indigenous yeast fermented with 50% whole bunches to 13.4% alc., the wine spending 21 days on skins and aged 18 months in 40% new French oak barriques."
