"Gewürztraminer to me is a wine full of contrasts. In the vineyard the variety is co-operative, thanks to its low demand and impeccable behaviour. It is not until harvest time when the complex, multi-facetted personality of this wine with becomes visible; wildly aromatic when it suits, bitter when not happy, with some age it captivates the harshest critic and sweet because we feel it needs it to bring the wine together.
On the nose too, the divisions are visible; ripe, tropical, soft flesh fruits like persimmon, papaya and rock melon are contrasted with orange marmalade, cloves and ginger. With a small and early picked portion fermented in barrel and aged on lees, faint floral notes and hints of vanilla are evident. The palate is strikingly consistent and complete, where the lack of focus becomes the focal point, perhaps testament to the four separate passes at picking time. The soft, cushion like entrance is followed by a bulky, luscious and textural mid palate, finished with long fresh tail. Like the texture, the fruit travels similarly over the palate through different spectra; peach and nashi pear at first followed by a Crème Brûlée and ginger and finished with lemon marmalade. Though appealing as a young wine, we recommend to restrain from opening this for another two years and for maximum gain of interest for another five to ten years."
5 Stars Michael Cooper (2016 Vintage)
"Hand-harvested in four stages, concluding with some heavily botrytised fruit, the 2016 vintage was mostly handled in tanks; about 10 per cent of the blend was barrel-fermented. Pale straw, with a perfumed, spicy bouquet, it is mouthfilling and fleshy, with rich, peachy, spicy flavours, gentle acidity and a slightly sweet (20 grams/litre residual sugar), lingering finish. Very 'open' in its youth, it's a delicious, intensely varietal wine; drink now or cellar."
5 Stars & 96/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, April 2017 (2016 Vintage)
"A stunning beauty. The wine is wonderfully perfumed, displaying mango, lychee, candied ginger and spice aromas. The palate is equally gratifying with superb concentration and weight, brilliantly complemented by succulent mouthfeel, rich texture and perfectly pitched acidity, making the wine seamless and immensely appealing. At its best: 2018 to 2026."
5 Stars & 19.0+/20 Raymond Chan, April 2017 (2016 Vintage)
"Bright, light golden-hued yellow with some depth, a little lighter on the edge. The nose is very fresh with refined and tightly bound, concentrated and penetrating with aromas of rose-petals and exotic florals, with notes of ripe yellow stonefruits unfolding a layer of musk entwined with nuances of honey and nuts. Medium to taste and medium-full bodied, the palate has bright, lively and rich with exotic fruit flavours of rose-petals and florals entwined with tropical fruits and yellow stonefruits, forming a concentrated core with notes of musk, spices and nutty elements. The palate has a firm line enlivened by refreshing, steely acidity, and the wine flows smoothly with fine textures guiding the flavours to a very long and sustained off-dry finish showing musk, florals, spices and honey. This is a tightly bound and concentrated medium Gewurztraminer with rich, but firm flavours of exotic florals, musk, spices and honey on a fresh, linear palate with a long, lingering finish. Serve with Asian and Middle Eastern fare over the next 5+ years. The fruit with shrivel harvested in 4 stages, the earliest pick comprising 12% of the wine fermented in and aged 8 months in a seasoned hogshead barrel, the remaining picks, the last with heavy botrytis infection, fermented in stainless-steel and aged 6 month on lees. The wine is 13.5% alc. and approx. 20 g/L RS, with TA 5.5 g/L and pH 3.46."
