The Mendoza clone - considered by many to be the key to producing fine NZ Chardonnay - is used for this wine. The wine is light in colour with a whiff of the classic "wet stones" and crushed walnuts along with citrus rather than stone fruit aromas. As with the nose, the palate features minerality, a suggestion of walnuts and flavours of freshly squeezed lemon with a long aftertaste. As a young wine it emphasizes the front palate but with time in the cellar, expect it to open out into the typical complex Dry River style if given appropriate cellaring conditions.
96/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit (2015 Vintage)
"An outstanding chardonnay, the gloriously complex bouquet exhibits yellow stone fruit, lemon pith, nougat and vanilla characters with nuances of brioche and cedar. The palate delivers awesome fruit concentration and weight, wonderfully enhanced by creamy texture and bright acidity. The wine offers layers of delectable flavours and finishes extremely long and expansive. Wonderful harmony and complexity. At its best: 2017 to 2025."
5 Stars Michael Cooper (2015 Vintage)
"Elegance, restraint and subtle power are the key qualities of this classic wine. It's not a bold, upfront style, but tight, savoury and seamless, with rich grapefruit and nut flavours that build in the bottle for several years. Based on low-cropping, Mendoza-clone vines in the Craighall and Dry River Estate vineyards, it is hand-harvested, whole-bunch pressed and fermented in French oak barrels (with a low percentage of new casks). The proportion of the blend that has gone through a softening malolactic fermentation has never exceeded 15 per cent. The 2015 vintage is a typically elegant, fragrant, complex wine. Mouthfilling, with a slightly biscuity, mealy bouquet, it is still very youthful, with deep grapefruit and peach flavours, gently seasoned with oak, balanced acidity and a tightly structured finish. A very ageworthy wine, it should be at its best 2018+."
5 Stars & 18.5+/20 Raymond Chan, November 2016 (2015 Vintage)
"Bright, light golden-yellow colour with some depth, lighter on the edge. The nose is very soft and gently voluminous with aromas of white and yellow stonefruits and citrus fruit, along with creamy, nutty barrel-ferment notes that build in intensity, revealing mealy and smoky complexities from the finely concentrated core. Medium-bodied, the palate is rounded in concentration with flavours of ripe yellow stonefruits and citrus fruit harmoniously melded creamy, mealy and nutty oak layers. The mouthfeel is soft and the wine quite accessible, underlined by very smooth textures, and background lacy acidity. The concentrated flavours are carried positively to a lingering, dry-textured finish with subtly rich stonefruit and nutty nuances. This is a rich, rounded, concentrated, but fresh Chardonnay with citrus and stonefruit flavours and layers of creamy, nutty barrel notes. Match with poultry and pork over the next 4-5 years. Fruit from the ‘Craighall’ and ‘Dry River’ sites, predominantly indigenous yeast, and fully barrel-fermented to 12.8% alc., the wine aged 10 months in 15% large format French oak, with light batonnage, avoiding MLF."
