5 Stars & 18.5/20 Raymond Chan, September 2016 (2013 Vintage)
"Deepish, dark ruby-red colour with garnet hues, lighter on the rim. The nose is well-concentrated with deep and complex aromas of savoury dark-red berry fruits in an amalgam of secondary development notes of dried thyme herbs, undergrowth, mushrooms and cedar, unfolding complex whole cluster stalk nuances. The nose builds to show good density and layers. Medium-full bodied, elegantly concentrated fruit flavours of dark, savoury red berryfruits, red florals and complexing secondary game and dried herb are harmoniously entwined with whole cluster stalk perfumes. The fruit is sweetly rich and forms a firm core with soft, flowery fine-grained tannin structure and balancing, fresh and lively acidity. The palate line is vibrant and driven, carrying to a rich, concentrated, lingering finish of dark red fruits and savoury herb notes. This is a rich, elegantly concentrated Pinot Noir with complex savoury, secondary flavours, fine structure and plenty of body and drive. Match with game meat dishes over the next 5-6+ years. Clones 10/5, 113, 777, 5 and 6 from the ‘South’ and ‘North’ blocks, vines planted in 2000, indigenous yeast fermented to 13.5% alc., with 30% whole bunches, the wine aged 10 months in 35% new oak."
4 1/2 Stars Michael Cooper (2013 Vintage)
"From Domaine-Thomson, at Lowburn, the 2013 vintage is still youthful. Matured for 10 months in French oak barrels (25 per cent new), it is bright ruby, with a fragrant bouquet of spices and dried herbs, showing good complexity. It is elegant and savoury, with vibrant plum, spice, herb and nut flavours, generous and harmonious. Best drinking 2019+."
