5 Stars Michael Cooper (2014 Vintage)
"This classy, finely structured red is estate-grown on the south side of the Wairau Valley and matured for 18 months in French oak barriques, of which a 'small portion' are new. The delicious 2014 vintage has deep, youthful colour. The bouquet is fragrant, plummy and spicy; the palate mouthfilling, with well-ripened plum/spice flavours, showing excellent complexity and richness, in a very savoury style with gentle acidity and impressive harmony. Best drinking 2018+."
5 Stars & 19.0-/20 Raymond Chan, April 2016 (2014 Vintage)
"Dark, deep, ruby-rd colour with dark purple hues, a little lighter on the rim. The nose is finely concentrated with bright and complex detailed aromas of dark red berry and cherry fruit intermixed with dark herbs and whole cluster aromatic stalk notes and some earthiness, unfolding dark red floral, raspberry liqueur and liquorice elements. Medium-bodied, the palate is refined and tightly concentrated with gently rich and plush flavours of dark red berry fruits, plums and liquorice entwined with spices, herbs and savoury whole cluster stalk elements, as well as violet florals. The wine has fine-grained tannins and structure balancing the sweet fruit, with integrated acidity lending drive and line. The wine carries to a refined, lingering finish of dark fruits and savoury herb and floral detail. This is an elegantly concentrated, rich Pinot Noir with dark berry fruit and complexing herb and spice notes, and a refined structure. Match with pork, lamb, beef and venison over the next 6 years. A blend of clones, 32% 777, 21% 667, 16% 5, 14% Abel, 10% 115 and 7% 10/5, from the ‘Dog Point’, ‘Yarrum’ and ‘Settlement’ sites, hand-picked and indigenous yeast fermented with approx. 15% whole clusters to 14.0% alc., and aged 18 months in 40% new French oak."
94/100 Gary Walsh, Wine Front, February 2017 (2014 Vintage)
"Cherry, mint nougat, plum and aromatic herbs. It’s medium bodied, fleshy and full of flavour, grainy tannin shapes it up, plump fruit with cool acidity, and a long tannin dusted finish. Lovely wine. Delightful."
Metro Top 50 Wines for Winter, May 2017 (2014 Vintage)
"Dog Point is a superstar in the southern hills of the Wairau Valley, and the past few vintages of its pinot noir have really raised the bar. The pretty nose is redolent of late-season strawberries and maraschino cherries, but there is a smoky, bacony undertone, a whiff of expensive oak and secondary development. This wine seems light and approachable, but there is some serious structure here, stacking up against beef, game and rich dishes."
