Gold Medal - New Zealand International Wine Show 2016
Dead Arm is a vine disease caused by the fungus Eutypa Lata that randomly affects vineyards all over the world. Often vines affected are severely pruned or replanted. One half, or an ‘arm’ of the vine slowly becomes reduced to dead wood. That side may be lifeless and brittle, but the grapes on the other side, while low yielding, display amazing intensity.
Winery notes (2013 Vintage)
"Decanting this wine is highly recommended to allow it to reach its true potential. Initially, our senses are flooded with an array of savoury, earthy notes. Shiitake mushrooms, roasted meats and modelling clay. Slowly as the air permeates through the wine, the savoury layers are peeled away revealing a wealth of sweet black fruits. The palate is similarly laden with blackberry, plum and mulberry flavours. The sweetness is offset by a raft of woody spices and umami character. Superbly rich and supported by by a core of slatey, crushed rock-like tannins, this is a wine that will reward patience."
96/100 James Halliday's Wine Companion (2013 Vintage)
"Crushed and destemmed, cultured yeast, open fermented with heading down boards, followed by up to 18 months in French oak. Inky purple-crimson hue; a powerful archetypal d'Arenberg Shiraz, swimming with black fruits of every description, dark chocolate and a generous helping of chewy tannins."
95/100 Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front, October 2016 (2013 Vintage)
"It takes time for the tannin to properly unfurl but give this some air and it sure struts its stuff. A Grade McLaren Vale shiraz not just in name, but in the glass. It presents a substantial serve of curranty, plum-drenched, blackberried fruit, the edges then played with saltbush, redcurrant, dried herbs and ferrous-like notes. Oak is present but compliant, offering subtle-ish notes of liquid cedar and woodsmoke. Tannin is both thoroughly and appropriately assertive; it takes command of the wine, eventually helping to deliver sweet aniseed notes to the aftertaste."
5 Stars & 19.0-/20 Raymond Chan, July 2017 (2013 Vintage)
"14.6% alc., aged 18 months in French and American oak barriques. Very dark, black-hued red colour. The bouquet is elegant in presentation and proportion, with intense and concentrated aromas of blackberried fruit, plums, liquorice and spices with a hint of eucalypt. This is remarkably refined and stylish. The palate is rich with sweet, but tightly bound flavours of black fruits, plums and liquorice. There are complexing spice and eucalypt notes. The fruit is supported by fine, grainy tannins which feature to lend the wine an elegance of structure and style. Beautiful intensity with a little classy elegance and grip."
