Winery notes (2011 Vintage)
"Colere (Latin for 'to cultivate and worship the land and spirit within') is that of an ethical one, an advocate for artisans, celebrating ethical organic/biodynamic vignerons throughout NZ. Colere wines seek out small unique parcels of interesting wines from these divergent minds who continue to develop their creativity in the winery and cultivate humility in the vineyard.

Whilst Bruce and Joanne Kerner cared for their vines, they always aimed to be true to the land and the fruit with quality wines that show the terroir of their 8 ha Marlborough vineyard established on their Fareham Lane property at the junction of the Wairau and Waihopi valleys in 1995.

There’s a lot to be said for the quality of the certified BioGro organically grown Kerner fruit the Kerners grew, with parcels sold to a number of high profile wine producers. The 2011 confluence Chardonnay was made by Brian Bicknell of Mahi wines, and displays the clarity of varietal expression of the Kerners humility in the vineyard coupled with Brian’s fairly subtle winemaking inputs.

The fruit was hand-picked and hand-sorted, Whole-bunch- pressed and barrel-fermented in old French oak with indigenous yeasts. Sulphur was added before malo-lactic fermentation could begin and then aged 10 months in oak. A single barrel bottling of Chablis styled Chardonnay Bruce and Joanne loved, but did not release, until now. Bright, full, light golden colour, pale on edge, the bouquet is full with rich aromas of yellow stonefruits and citrus fruits along with nutty oak and savoury secondary development notes. Medium-full bodied, the fruit flavours are up-front, an integrated amalgam of ripe stonefruits and savoury citrus fruits, toasted nuts and oak. The palate has good underlying acidity providing liveliness that carries to a long, toasty-nuanced finish. This is a flavoursome Chardonnay with good fruit and subtle oak that has come into maturity."
