A legend of legends, the wonderful Clos des Papes eschews the heaviness and fruit focus of many a modern Chateauneuf to define an elegant, complex and 'Burgundian' approach to this preeminent Southern Rhone village. The previous vintage was named in Wine Spectator's Top 10 wines of 2014 - out of 18,000 tasted. It's cellar wine and a bucket-list Chateauneuf to be sure, or to those in the know it is simply the one.
93-95/100 Josh Raynolds, Vinous (2014 Vintage)
"(bottled with 14.3% alcohol and a pH of 3.7): Deep ruby. Highly perfumed scents of candied dark berries, cola and lavender oil develop a suave, smoky Indian spice nuance. Fleshy, expansive red and dark berry and floral pastille flavours display an impressive blend of richness and energy, picking up a mineral flourish with air. Finishes juicy, sweet and very long, displaying lingering, spice-tinged dark fruit flavours and slow-building tannins."
92-94/100 Jeb Dunnuck, Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate (2014 Vintage)
"From yields in range of 15 hectoliter per hectare, the 2014 Châteauneuf du Pape is reminiscent of the 2008 and reveals a healthy ruby colour to go with the classic kirsch, dried flowers and spice notes that I always find in Avril’s wines. Showing an almost Pinot Noir-like texture with medium to full-bodied richness, sweet tannin and outstanding length, it will certainly be one of the more approachable, forward wines from this estate, and it should be a low to mid-nineties scoring effort...As I commented in my recent retrospective article, Clos des Pape is one of the reference point estates for traditional, age-worthy Châteauneuf du Pape."
17.5/20 Jancis Robinson (2014 Vintage)
"Sandy cuvée of 2014 (2/3 of the whole): Very high toned and florally fragrant. Almost light! Very fine, supple tannins. Long with just a suggestion of heat on the finish. Clayey cuvée of 2014 (1/3 of the whole): A little more robust with slightly more marked tannins and a hint of gaminess as a grace note. Round and filling. Blend should really tick all the boxes of a refined Châteauneuf – very different from the old norm! Acidity perceptible. A tentative assemblage emphasised the spicy nature and Grenache characteristics of this famous wine. Drink 2024 - 2040."
