CALABRIA THREE BRIDGES DURIF 2016 is available to buy in increments of 1
Over the last few years this wine has picked up an almost cult following. It is big, bold, powerful and intensely concentrated, with brooding aromas of black fruits and dark chocolate. The palate is definitely on the rich and weighty side, but not over-the-top, with the tannins and dusty oak balancing the fruit and alcohol nicely. Demand far exceeds demand for this wine around the world and it has been a very pleasant surprise to get the allocation, albeit a limited amount - be in!
The 2016 is a brand new release and hasn't been reviewed yet but these from the 2015 vintage wines tell the story well...
Winery notes (2015 Vintage)
"Intense deep crimson with vibrant purple hue. 3 Bridges Durif has an aromatic blood plum and dark chocolate nose with an array of ripe blackberries, supported by toasty American oak. A full bodied palate with big rich characters, encompassing a tannic mouth feel of vanillin and coconut combined with sweet fruit and warm alcohol."
92/100 Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front, February 2017 (2015 Vintage)
"The Riverina is a pretty dab hand at growing and making durif. Rutherglen is almost synonymous, in a red wine sense, with the variety but the Riverina rivals it. Controversial. This is a gutsy red. Plenty of stuffing. Dark, berried, tar-like, lightly kissed by creamy, chocolatey vanillin. Tannic in a chewy sense; a good thing. You can sink your teeth into it. Big Red hunters; this is an excellent option."
5 Stars & 18.5/20 Raymond Chan, February 2017 (2015 Vintage)
"Full, near saturated, black-hued purple-red colour. The nose is very full and softly voluminous with sweetly ripe, aromatic fruit aromas of blackberries and plums with soft notes of boysenberries, forming a dense core, unfolding black ink, tar, dark herb and cedary oak elements. Full-bodied, the palate is sweetly rich with plush flavours of ripe blackberries, dark raspberries, plums and liquorice. Nuances of bitter chocolate, black ink and cedary oak add interest. The fruit sweetness is supported by fine-grained, powdery tannin extraction and structure that lends a balancing dryness, and the acidity is well integrated. The mouthfeel is rounded, with the firm core and line carrying to a sweet, lingering finish of boysenberries, plums and liquorice. This is a rich, lusciously ripe, full-bodied Durif with blackberry, raspberry, plum and liquorice flavours with a fine, firm core. Match with roasted game meat dishes over the next 6-8 years. Fruit from the Riverina, fermented to 14.5% alc., aged 12 months in new and seasoned American oak."
