Winery notes (2006 Vintage)
"Tempranillo grapes were hand picked from 30 year-old vines in stony vineyards – Valdepeñas means “valley of rocks” – in late August/early September. The soils are clayey lime and there is a chalky layer which retains water to refresh the vines. Altitude helps moderate summer heat, as the climate in Valdepeñas is classic continental, with cold winters and long hot, dry summers.

An intense dark red shading to brick red at the rim. A range of different characteristics can be identified on the nose – black cherry fruit, spicy notes of leather and musk, tobacco and vanilla oak. Medium to full bodied with some finesse, concentrated red fruit compote flavours and smooth, mellow tannins on the finish."

5 Stars & 93/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, August 2017 (2006 Vintage)
"Beautifully complex and engaging, the gorgeous bouquet shows sweet fruit, vanilla, toasted almond, leather and mixed spice aromas, leading to a finely textured palate that is supple, silky and flowing. The wine offers deep spicy/savoury flavours with seductive ripe fruit undertones, wonderfully framed by polished tannins. A real treat to have a wine of this maturity on the market. At its best: now to 2019."
4 Stars & 17.5+/20 Raymond Chan, March 2018 (2006 Vintage)
"Full, even, dark ruby-red colour with slight garnet hues, a little lighter on the edge. The nose is softly full with integrated and layered aromas of ripe black plum fruit and soft notes of liquorice, along with savoury secondary and nutty elements and sweet, cedary oak. The bouquet is soft and grows in intensity with aeration. Medium-bodied, the palate has gently mouthfilling and harmoniously integrated flavours of ripe dark plums, liquorice and savoury dark herb and earthy notes, melded with a layering of sweet, cedary oak. The fruit is developing savoury secondary detail and is supported by fine, velvety tannins, with soft, integrated acidity adding to the harmony. The wine flows smoothly to a sustained, sweet, cedary finish. This is a harmoniously integrated Valdepenas Gran Reserva with layers of plum, liquorice, savoury earth and cedary oak flavours on a smooth-flowing palate. Serve with slow-cooked game meat dishes over the next 4 years. Tempranillo fruit fermented to 13.0% alc., the wine aged at least 18 months in oak barriques."
