Black Estate have certainly established themselves as one of the stars of Waipara in recent years. Their wines are outstanding across the board and their winery restaurant is so busy it can be a challenge to get into on the weekend! This is fantastic Pinot and equally as nice at home as it is at Black Estate.
2015 was a high quality, low yielding vintage. Plenty of red and black fruits and light spice. There wine is nicely integrated and as Nicholas described the tannins are ‘melting’ into the wine. Supple texture with plenty of power but good elegance with 12.5% alcohol – just goes to show you don’t need over-ripeness to get the flavour and texture right. An excellent Pinot Noir.
Winery notes (2015 Vintage)
"Deep ruby hue. Red and black forest fruit, with black current and raspberry, wild rose and subtle fresh spice. Berry fruits are rich and broad, sensual and luscious with underlying savoury earth and gentle but persistent minerality. The balance gives a clear impression of the highly mineralised sedimentary clay soils of the Home Vineyard. Concentrated, with fresh and energising minerality. Drink now to 2027.

Nice depth here: textural with vivid, tightwound cherry and berry fruits. Has some herby undertones and fine spiciness.
5 Stars & 94/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, March 2017 (2015 Vintage)
"From their Home Vineyard (est 1994), this sturdy pinot offers lifted aromas of dark fruit, mature game, clove and black tea on the nose. The palate is concentrated and impressively weighted, and delivers superb fruit power and rich texture, firmly structured by fine, drying tannins. A seriously structured wine for pinot enthusiasts. Organic and biodynamic farming practices have been used since 2010. At its best: now to 2022."
5 Stars & 18.5+/20 Raymond Chan, March 2017 (2015 Vintage)
"Full, dark, deep ruby-red colour with youthful purple hues, a little lighter on the rim. The nose is softly full and solidly packed with aromas of dark-red cherry and berry fruit along with subtle plum notes, unfolding dried herbs and an earthy-mineral amalgam. With aeration, dark herb and stalk suggestions add complexity, and the aromatics grow in density. Medium-bodied, the palate is rich and vibrant with ripe dark-red berry and cherry fruit along with notes of red plums, unfolding an array of dark herb and stalk notes, lifted florals and mineral elements. The palate is fulsome in flavour with fine-grained tannins and fresh, underlying acidity providing energy and drive. The structure and the acidity carries the wine with positive linearity to a long, rich, flavoursome finish. This is a rich, ripe, fulsome Pinot Noir with cherry, berry and plum flavours interwoven with herb, stalk and floral notes on a tine-grained and structured palate. Match with lamb, beef and venison dishes over the next 6-8 years. From ungrafted vines, predominantly clone 10/5 planted in 1994, hand-picked and 76% destemmed giving 80% uncrushed berries, and vineyard yeast fermented to 12.5% alc., the wine on skins 28 days and aged 12 months in seasoned 228 L French oak. 638 dozen made."
4 1/2 Stars Michael Cooper (2015 Vintage)
"The 2015 vintage was grown in the home vineyard at Omihi, planted in 1994. Hand-picked, it was fermented with indigenous yeasts, matured for a year in seasoned French oak barriques, and bottled unfined and unfiltered. Deep ruby, it is mouthfilling, savoury and supple, with concentrated, ripe, plummy, spicy flavours, showing good structure, density and complexity. Still youthful, it has obvious cellaring potential."
94/100 ozwinereview.com (2015 Vintage)
"The purple colour here is off the charts. It could almost be young Shiraz. Apparently that purpleness is not unusual in North Canterbury but I found it remarkable. From a warmer season this is a much grander wine and looks rather more complete compared to the ’14. Tannins seems riper too. Such a classy, subtly powerful wine. Structure first, but not hulking. Again just 12.5% alcohol! Best drinking: 2018-2025. Would I buy it? Yes."
