Made in the same way as the Home Vineyard, allowing the site characters to shine. The combination of sandstone/limestone soils with some clay has given the wine its bright fragrant, floral/violet flavours with a silken texture. There is palate filling succulence balanced with minerality. A very attractive Pinot Noir that was voted the ‘wine of the night’ at our Wine Tasting with winemaker Nicholas Brown.
Winery notes (2015 Vintage)
"The Damsteep Vineyard is located in the north east of Waipara Valley at the foot of the Omihi Saddle in North Canterbury. This Pinot Noir is grown on a 5.5 hectare vineyard with 9 different parcels of various north east, north, and north west facing slopes, with an altitude between 140 to 180 meters above sea level. The vines here were planted in 1999 and grow on clay overlying fractured limestone and sandstone soils. Organic and biodynamic farming practices have been used since 2012. The Damsteep Vineyard will be fully certified organic with BioGro in March 2017."
5 Stars Michael Cooper (2015 Vintage)
"The impressive 2015 vintage was estate-grown at Omihi, in the Damsteep Vineyard, planted in 1999. Fermented with indigenous yeasts, it was matured for a year in seasoned French oak barrels, and bottled unfined and unfiltered. Deep ruby, it is mouthfilling and supple, with generous, ripe cherry, plum and spice flavours that build well across the palate, slightly earthy notes adding complexity, a subtle seasoning of oak, and excellent depth and harmony. Showing obvious cellaring potential, it should be at its best 2019 onwards."
5 Stars & 19.0/20 Raymond Chan, March 2017 (2015 Vintage)
"Dark, deep ruby-red colour with purple hues, lighter edged. The nose is elegantly concentrated with deep and intensely packed aromas of fresh, but savoury, ripe dark-red berry and cherry fruit along with subtle violet and red floral lift, unfolding an array of fragrances and perfumes. The aromatics build in intensity in the glass. Medium-bodied, the palate features attractively rich and lusciously sweet, juicy flavours of ripe red cherries and dark red berry fruits, complexed by subtle notes of dark herbs, lifted by dark-red and violet florals. The palate is vibrant with succulent fruit and elegantly proportioned, with fine-grained flowery tannins and balancing acidity lending poise, energy and tension. The wine leads to a long, lingering finish showing vitality, fruitiness and aromatics. This is an elegant, vibrant, succulently sweet-fruited Pinot Noir with red cherry and berry fruit lifted by herb and floral aromatics on a fine-grained palate with lively acidity. Serve with poultry, pork and veal dishes over the next 6-8 years. From 9 parcels, vines planted in 1999, hand-picked and 75% destemmed giving 70% whole berries, and vineyard yeast fermented to 13.0% alc., the wine on skins 28 days and aged 12 months in seasoned oak. 442 dozen made."
94/100 Jamie Goode (2015 Vintage)
"Beautifully focused with pure, silky, fresh cherry fruit and fine spiciness. Real elegance here with nice grainy structure."
93/100 Cameron Douglas MS (2015 Vintage)
"Fragrant, quite fruity and varietal with cherry and dark berry scents, a layer of savoury and oak spice complexity with a hint of cocoa. On the palate - dry, fruity, savoury and complex, a lovely example of Pinot Noir with  minerality, fine to moderate tannins, a back bone of acidity and core of fruity and lengthy finish. Drink now and through 2026."
