Winery notes (2015 Vintage)
"Crimson is our selection of fruit from younger parcels of vines from our various vineyards on the Martinborough Terrace. Vine age ranges from 5-20 years. In their youth, vines tend to be more fruit expressive, gaining more complexity with age (as do we all!). The winemaking philosophy is the same as for our signature Pinot Noir; no enzymes or yeasts are added, providing a hands-off, traditional approach to expressing the site. What we find in the 2015 year is a length and drive that belies the age of the vines. More savoury in spectrum than previous vintages, the nose exudes spice, red licorice and a medley of bramble fruit. All carry through onto the palate, with the older vine portion providing real weight and a fine line and length"
5 Stars & 18.5+/20 Raymond Chan, October 2016 (2015 Vintage)
"Everything a ‘young vine’ Pinot Noir should be – fresher, lighter, more accessible, and not sharper, harsher or greener as many second labels can be. Moderately deep ruby-red with youthful purple hues. The fruit flavours of dark-red berry fruits are fresh, vibrant, ripe and bright, with nuances of fresh herbs. This has wonderful primary fruit lift and fragrance. On palate just so juicy and succulent, with plush and vibrant dark red cherry and berry fruits, subtle herbal lift, very fine extraction and refreshing acidity. The wine has linearity and seriousness at the core. But it is just delicious."
91/100 Mike Bennie, The Wine Front, October 2016 (2015 Vintage)
"Crimson is the ‘entry level’ Ata Rangi pinot noir but also a wine that helps fund a charitable conservation trust that looks to preserve some native trees known as Rata in New Zealand. Hey, this is good lookin’. That pretty, sweet-and-floral suckers you. Smells like pot pourri, dark chocolate Turkish Delight and berries on briar, all at once. Supple to sip on. Sluice of cherry juice, fine web of tannins, barely there mocha kiss, finishes bright and faintly chalky. It’s super easy to drink but has enough concentration of flavour and direction to give a pinotphile some satisfaction. Nicely done."
