ATA RANGI CRAIGHALL CHARDONNAY 2015 is available to buy in increments of 1
This highly regarded Chardonnay is produced predominantly from low-yielding, 'hen & chicken' berried Mendoza clone vines planted at Craighall Vineyard over 25 years ago. Indigenous yeasts that hang about the vineyard and winery all year round, magically transform the juice through a relatively slow onset of fermentation, resulting in a very textural, multi-faceted wine.
Winery notes (2015 Vintage)
"Craighall, our premium Chardonnay, is from prized blocks of low-yielding Mendoza clone vines. The oldest, now over 30 years of age, are situated directly opposite the Ata Rangi home block in the heart of the deep, free-draining gravels that make up the Martinborough Terrace. Add in low annual rainfall and typically strong Wairarapa winds and the result is a high percentage of tiny berries, giving wine of serious concentration and drive with tight, bright acidity. A very alluring, restrained nose of citrus, white-flesh nectarine and citrus blossom leads onto a tight, fine palate with a subtly chalky texture. With no one, single flavour dominating, the 2015 is an intriguing, very complex and very complete Chardonnay with fabulous flow and persistence. Fully barrel fermented with 'wild' indigenous yeasts, we're confident this exceptional release has excellent cellaring potential."
5 Stars & 96/100 Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review, September 2016 (2015 Vintage)
"Rich, creamy, mouth-filling chardonnay with peach, tree fruit, cashew nut and bran biscuit flavours. Attractive, textural wine, with an impressively lingering finish. I’m sure it will age well but find it irresistibly drinkable right now."
96/100 Cameron Douglas MS (2015 Vintage)
"Soft fragrant, enticing and alluring frangrances of white fleshed peach and nectarine, creamy, soft and rounded textures on the nose, as the wine begins to open up in the glass the gentle spices of oak start to show and increase in volume, a natural harmony between these elements leads to a complex and and generous cresendo. On the palate - dry, fruity, complex, youthful, engaging, lengthy. A delicious wine with power, harmony and youth on its side. Drink now if decanted - otherwise cellar and enjoy from late 2017 through 2022."
5 Stars & 19.5/20 Raymond Chan, October 2016 (2015 Vintage)
"This shows richness and layers of fruit with barrel-ferment, and a far more opulent mouthfeel, but not the penetration. This just fills the mouth. Old vines doing their job. Bright straw-yellow with green hues. This is creamy and nutty, the barrel ferment and oak totally melded with layers of sweet, ripe stonefruits and tropical fruit, mealy notes, and integrated MLF butteriness. The palate reflects the decadence of the nose, the savoury fruit balancing the sweetness. Soft and lush textures, yet fine, poised acidity. Very rich, long finishing. Something very special here, and a must buy."
5 Stars Michael Cooper (2015 Vintage)
"This memorable Martinborough wine has notable richness, complexity and downright drinkability. From a company-owned block of low-yielding Mendoza-clone vines in the Craighall Vineyard, planted in 1983, it is hand-picked, whole-bunch pressed and fermented with indigenous yeasts in French oak barriques (typically 25 per cent new). Light lemon/green, the graceful 2015 vintage is mouthfilling, sweet-fruited and vibrantly fruity, with concentrated, very youthful, grapefruit and peach flavours, mealy and biscuity notes adding complexity, and a fragrant, slightly smoky bouquet. It should be long-lived; open 2018 onwards."
5 Stars & 95/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, August 2016 (2015 Vintage)
"Supremely elegant and refined, this stylish chardonnay shows delicate aromas of white stone fruit, lemon peel, brioche and vanilla on the nose. The palate is concentrated and focused with silky texture and bright fruit flavours, brilliantly framed by juicy acidity. The wine is restrained and tightly structured, promising to evolve magnificently. A class act as always. At its best: 2018 to 2025."
93/100 Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate, December 2016 (2015 Vintage)
"The 2015 Craighall Chardonnay offers delicate notes of honeyed white peaches, baking bread and lemon tart with hints of marzipan and orange blossoms. Light to medium-bodied, the palate is elegantly fruited and yet with great intensity and persistence, showing layers of citrus, stone fruit and yeasty flavors plus a lovely floral perfume. Yum!"
