This highly regarded Chardonnay is produced predominantly from low-yielding, 'hen & chicken' berried Mendoza clone vines planted at Craighall Vineyard over 25 years ago. Indigenous yeasts that hang about the vineyard and winery all year round, magically transform the juice through a relatively slow onset of fermentation, resulting in a very textural, multi-faceted wine.
5 Stars & 96/100 Bob Campbell MW (2014 Vintage)
"Taut, elegant chardonnay with grapefruit, tree fruit, white peach, cashew nut, a hint of mineral, reductive character and spicy oak. A youthful wine with restrained power and a lingering finish."
5 Stars & 95/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit (2014 Vintage)
"This is elegant and seductive, yet there is a powerful engine driving the concentrated fruit and layers of complex flavours. The bouquet is inviting, engaging and intriguing with aromas of white stone fruit, rockmelon, nougat and brioche, with hints of vanilla and cedar. Wonderful weight and harmony. Stunning composure and finish. At its best: 2016 to 2024."
5 Stars & 19.0/20 Raymond Chan, October 2015 (2014 Vintage)
"Bright, pale straw colour. The nose is elegant, but shows excellent concentration of citrus fruits, stonefruits, nutty and spicy oak, and beautiful mineral purity and finesse. A touch of class here. Striking clarity of expression, with citrus and stonefruits, flint, oak and minerals in lovely balance for development. Fine acid vitality and phenolic linearity, and plenty of detail emerges in the glass. Finishes with crisp acidity and minerality. Mendoza clone, indigenous yeast barrel-ferment, 12 months in 25% new French oak barriques, partial MLF."
5 Stars Michael Cooper (2014 Vintage)
"This memorable Martinborough wine has notable richness, complexity and downright drinkability. From a company-owned block of low-yielding Mendoza-clone vines in the Craighall Vineyard, planted in 1983, it is hand-picked, whole-bunch pressed and fermented with indigenous yeasts in French oak barriques (typically 25 per cent new). The 2014 vintage is still extremely youthful. Mouthfilling, with fresh, strong, citrusy, biscuity flavours, it is vibrant, vigorous, minerally and complex, with a tightly structured, lasting finish. Best drinking 2017+."
