It's been a long time coming but finally Astrolabe have released their 2017 Sauvignon Blanc. Although the wait has been excruciating it is a good thing as this has now had time to settle into the bottle, and itself, and delivers all the goodness we expect from what has been our biggest selling Sauvignon Blanc for well over a decade now. The 2017 is another tour de force from the Sauvignon maestro, Simon Waghorn. The effort that the Astrolabe team put into this wine is amazing - low yields, careful fruit selection from a range of vineyard sites around Marlborough and gentle pressing to avoid any aggressive characters resulting in a style that has taken years to achieve.

Pure and crisp on the nose with fresh grassy herbs, white fruits and citrus. Concentrated and luscious on the palate, without being heavy, in fact the balance is spot on. Rich fruits, feijoa, white nectarine and ripe gooseberry fill the palate and gentle sweet herb/lemon thyme and a fine minerally acidity draws out the length and the flavours continue to linger beautifully. Mouthwatering and absolutely moreish.
Winery notes (2017 Vintage)
The Astrolabe Province Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is made from grapes grown across three Marlborough sub-regions — the Wairau Valley, the Awatere Valley and the Kekerengu Coast. We machine harvest the grapes at night or in the cool parts of the day to preserve the purity and intensity of flavours. In the winery, we take great care to handle the fruit in a way which allows the flavours and aromas of the region to come through. Sauvignon Blanc is widely considered by the wine drinkers of the world to reach its pinnacle of potential in Marlborough. My style is dry, expressive and elegantly balanced. – Simon Waghorn, Winemaker.

Pale straw with green highlights. Aromas of lemon grass, lime peel and elderflower, with background notes of white currant and red pepper. The palate is medium-bodied with white peach, gooseberry and citrus flavours, and a dry mineral finish."
92/100 Bob Campbell MW, October 2017 (2017 Vintage)
"A truly Marlborough style sauvignon blanc that comprises a blend of fruit from the Wairau and Awatere Valleys. Quite concentrated grapefruit, guava and subtle passionfruit flavours supported by fruity acidity. Good weight and texture. Drink 2017 - 2020."
4 1/2 Stars Michael Cooper (2017 Vintage)
"The 2017 vintage - the first not to be labelled 'Province Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc - is a regional blend, grown in the Awatere Valley (51 per cent), Wairau Valley (30 per cent) and at Kekerengu (19 per cent). Made in a fully dry style (1.5 grams/litre of residual sugar), it is mouthfilling, finely balanced and clearly herbaceous, with strong, vibrant melon, green capsicum and lime flavours, a slightly salty streak, and a crisp, long finish."
